about

Prehistoric Sounds is based in Warrnambool in South West Victoria and is wholly owned an operated by Shane Godfrey. The company started in September 2009, known at the time as Sweet Little Hi-Fi, initially as an online retailer for turntable accessories and record sleeves.

Over time we started stocking 2nd hand LPs and later New vinyl too. We started selling as part of Warrnambool Independent Traders Market in three different sites across the city and expanding to the Mill Markets in Newcomb (a suburb of Geelong) after identifying nowhere at the time was selling new vinyl in the greater Geelong area. We were also popping up at Record Fairs in Victoria, NSW and South Australia.

At the beginning of 2017, we decided to drop the turntable accessories from our range and become a fully fledged record store moving to a garage off Liebig Street and changing our name to Prehistoric Sounds. Named after the iconic album by seminal Australian punk band The Saints. Much to our surprise, the name had not been used before for a record store.

Fast forward to April 2019, by chance we saw a shop being vacated at 99 Kepler Street, we quickly contacted the landlord and by April 10th we had opened at the new location just in time for Record Store Day.

We import new releases and reissues from all over the world with suppliers in the US, UK, Japan, Europe and of course here in Australia. If we don't have a title you are after, please ask as we will try our best to get it in for you.

We still have the permanent stall at The Amazing Mill Markets in Newcomb (Geelong) and generally restock there each Tuesday with the latest releases and reissues.

In Warrnambool, we are open Monday to Friday 11am to 5pm and Saturday 11am to 2pm. Other times when available by appointment.
